A bathhouse is company, a spa is silence
The main difference between a bathhouse and a spa is that people come in a group and talk. Total silence is as out of place here as loud music in a treatment room. You need a noticeable but not intrusive background that holds the atmosphere without making anyone raise their voice.
The steam room itself is a different case: guests sit quietly there and any sound is felt more sharply. That's why the steam room and the lounge are better kept on separate playlists.
Humidity, wood and equipment
In a sauna complex the speakers are almost always outside the steam room, so sound arrives through a door or around a corner and part of the range is lost on the way. Add the constant noise of ventilation and the plunge pool.
That's why mixes with a dense midrange and no delicate detail up top work: folk melodies, warm instrumentals, calm folk, neoclassical. They can be heard where thin ambient simply disappears.

A sauna complex is easiest to set up by zone: the steam room, the lounge and the pool have different sound requirements.

No PRO fees for our music
A typical background-music service gives you tracks by well-known artists. The rights to those tracks belong to labels and songwriters, so a complex may also have to deal with a performing rights organization (PRO), such as ASCAP or BMI in the US, PRS for Music in the UK or SOCAN in Canada, on top of the subscription.
Harmonia works differently. Our catalog is original music produced for business use, and a public-performance license for your venue is included in the subscription. Our tracks are not registered with PROs such as ASCAP, BMI, PRS, SOCAN, APRA AMCOS or GEMA, so playing music from our catalog does not create PRO fees for that music.

Send an application and we approve it within a business day. After that, the music plays on the devices you already have in the complex: a tablet at the front desk, a laptop or a mini-PC with a speaker.
Staff don't have to pick anything each morning. Playlists and the schedule are set once, then the music starts by itself and doesn't repeat during a shift. For a chain, everything is managed centrally, by location and zone, from one account.

Do I need to pay PRO fees for music in a sauna?
Not for our catalog. Every Harmonia track is original music produced for business use and is not registered with PROs such as ASCAP, BMI, SOCAN, PRS for Music, APRA AMCOS or GEMA. You pay only the subscription, and it includes a public-performance license for your venue.
What music suits a sauna?
For the lounge: warm instrumental, calm folk and folk melodies at a noticeable volume, since guests come as a group and talk. For the steam room: near silence. A dense midrange matters: sound arrives through a door or around a corner and loses the delicate detail up top.
How much does music for saunas cost per month?
From $12/mo per location when billed annually ($144 a year). Monthly billing is $17/mo. Each additional location in the same company is cheaper: $7/mo billed annually or $12/mo billed monthly. A separate zone with its own playlist is $4/mo billed annually or $5/mo billed monthly. There are no hidden fees for genres or devices.
Can I play Spotify or Apple Music in a sauna?
No. Personal accounts on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music are licensed for personal, non-commercial listening only, and their terms of service forbid playing them in a business. Music in a public space counts as public performance, which a personal subscription does not cover. You need either a public-performance license from the rights organizations in your country or a catalog that is licensed for business use, like ours.
Can I play different music in the steam room and the lounge?
Yes, and for a sauna complex it's the main scenario. Each zone gets its own playlist, volume and schedule. A zone costs from $4/mo on top of the location.
What do I show during a music licensing inspection?
Two documents: your subscription agreement with Harmonia and the license certificate (PDF) issued for each location. The certificate confirms that the venue holds a public-performance license for our catalog. If a rights organization contacts you, write to legal@harmonia-b2b.com and we will help you with the paperwork.
What happens if I play unlicensed music in a sauna?
Playing music publicly without the right license can lead to claims and fines from performing rights organizations (PROs). The rules and the amounts depend on the country. A subscription to a catalog that includes a public-performance license removes this risk for the music you play from it.
What equipment does the music play on?
Almost anything: a POS terminal, mini-PC, TV box, Smart TV, laptop, or an Android or iOS phone. You don't need to buy special hardware. Everything runs through the web player or the app.
